How the Rugby World Rankings Calculator Works

World Rugby rankings use a points exchange system.

After an eligible international match, the winning team gains rating points and the losing team gives up the same number. In a draw, points can also move from the higher-rated team to the lower-rated team.

The amount exchanged depends on:

• Each team’s rating before the match
• Whether the match is won, lost or drawn
• The difference in rating between the teams
• Whether the winning margin is more than 15 points
• Whether the match is played at the Rugby World Cup

This means not every win is worth the same amount.

If a highly rated team beats a much lower-rated opponent, only a small number of points may change hands. If the lower-rated team wins instead, the exchange can be considerably larger.

How to Use the Rugby Ranking Calculator

To calculate a possible ranking change:

1. Select the two national teams
2. Choose the winner or select a draw
3. Select whether the winning margin is 15 points or fewer or more than 15 points
4. Choose whether the match is being played at the Rugby World Cup
5. View the estimated points gained and lost

You can change the result to compare different scenarios for the same match.

How Are World Rugby Rankings Calculated?

Each World Rugby member union has a rating, typically between 0 and 100, with the highest-ranked teams normally rated above 90.

When two eligible national teams play, the system compares their ratings before the match and calculates a core rating change based on the result and the difference in strength between them.

The fundamental rule is simple: whatever one team gains, the other team loses.

As a result, the total number of rating points shared between the two teams remains unchanged after the match.

The rankings therefore reward unexpected results more heavily than predictable ones. Beating a team rated well above you is worth more than beating a team whose rating is significantly lower.

Does Winning Margin Affect Rugby Rankings?

Yes, but World Rugby uses only two winning-margin categories:

• 15 points or fewer
• More than 15 points

If a team wins by more than 15 points, the core rating change is multiplied by 1.5.

For example, if the initial points exchange is calculated as 1.00 rating point:

• A win by 15 points or fewer would exchange 1.00 point
• A win by more than 15 points would exchange 1.50 points

There is no additional multiplier for increasingly large scores. A 40-point win does not receive another bonus compared with a 20-point win simply because the margin is larger.

Does Home Advantage Affect World Rugby Rankings?

No.

World Rugby removed home weighting from its ranking calculations from 1 July 2026.

Before that change, the home team was treated as if its rating were three points higher when the ranking exchange was calculated. This reduced the reward for winning at home and increased the potential loss for a home defeat.

That adjustment is no longer part of the current calculation.

This is worth remembering when comparing this calculator with older IRB ranking calculators or ranking formulas published before July 2026, as they may still include the former home-advantage rule.

Do Rugby World Cup Matches Count More?

Yes.

Ranking-point exchanges are doubled during Rugby World Cup matches.

For example, suppose a normal calculation produces an exchange of 1.20 rating points.

In a regular international:

1.20 points are exchanged.

In a Rugby World Cup match:

1.20 × 2 = 2.40 points are exchanged.

If the winning margin is also more than 15 points, the margin weighting is applied as part of the calculation before the World Cup weighting.

All other eligible full internationals are treated equally for ranking purposes, regardless of whether they are friendlies or tournament matches.

Rugby Ranking Calculator Example

Suppose:

• Team A: 90.00 ranking points
• Team B: 84.00 ranking points

Team A starts six rating points ahead of Team B.

If Team A wins, the result is relatively predictable, so it would normally receive only a small increase in rating.

If Team B wins, the result is an upset. Team B would gain considerably more points because it defeated a much stronger opponent, while Team A would lose the same amount.

If Team B wins by more than 15 points, the calculated exchange receives the 1.5 margin multiplier.

If the match is also played at the Rugby World Cup, the points exchange is doubled.

The calculator handles these adjustments automatically.

Why Can World Rugby Rankings Change Quickly?

The biggest ranking movements tend to happen when a match produces an unexpected result.

A team’s rating can move more significantly when:

• A lower-rated team beats a much higher-rated team
• The winning margin is greater than 15 points
• The match takes place during a Rugby World Cup

Ranking positions can also change even when a team does not play.

For example, if two teams sit close together in the table and one of them loses rating points, another team may move above it despite remaining on the same rating.

IRB Ranking Calculator vs World Rugby Rankings Calculator

An IRB ranking calculator and a World Rugby rankings calculator refer to essentially the same ranking system.

The International Rugby Board changed its name to World Rugby in 2014, but the older IRB terminology is still commonly used when people search for ranking calculators and explanations.

The important difference is not the name but the version of the ranking rules being used.

Older calculators may still apply historical rules such as the three-point home weighting. This calculator is designed around the current World Rugby methodology.
